Google Reviews & Reputation: The Most Overlooked Local SEO Factor for PEI Businesses

Most PEI small businesses ignore reviews as an SEO tool. Here's why they're one of the strongest local ranking signals — and how to get more of them.

Ask most PEI business owners about their local SEO strategy and they will mention their website, maybe their Google Business Profile, possibly some keywords. Almost none of them will mention reviews — and that is a significant missed opportunity.

Google reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals available to small businesses. They influence where you appear in search results, how often you show up in the local map pack, and whether a visitor who finds you actually decides to contact you. Yet most businesses treat reviews as a passive byproduct of doing good work rather than an active part of their marketing strategy.

That needs to change.

Why Reviews Are a Local Ranking Signal

Google's local search algorithm weighs dozens of factors when deciding which businesses to show in local results. Review quantity, review recency, and overall star rating are among the most heavily weighted. A business with 60 reviews and a 4.7-star average will consistently outrank a competitor with 8 reviews and a 5-star average — even if the competitor's website is technically better optimised.

The logic makes sense from Google's perspective. Reviews are social proof at scale. A business that has served 60 customers well enough to earn a review is demonstrably more established and trusted than one with a handful. Google rewards that signal with visibility.

Review recency also matters. A business that received 50 reviews two years ago and has gone quiet since will rank lower than a competitor with 30 reviews but a steady stream of new ones. Google interprets recent reviews as a sign that the business is active, relevant, and continuing to serve customers well.

How to Ask for Reviews Without Being Pushy

The biggest reason most PEI businesses have too few reviews is simple: they never ask. They assume satisfied customers will leave reviews on their own. Some do — but most do not, not because they are unhappy, but because it simply does not occur to them unless someone makes it easy.

The most effective review-generation strategy is also the simplest: ask directly, immediately after a positive interaction, and make it as easy as possible to follow through.

  • Send a follow-up text or email — Within 24 hours of completing a job or service, send a brief message thanking the customer and including a direct link to your Google review page. One tap, no searching required.
  • Ask in person — If you have a face-to-face interaction with a satisfied customer, a simple "If you have a moment, a Google review would mean a lot to us" goes a long way. Most people are happy to help when asked directly.
  • Add a review link to your invoices and receipts — A QR code or short URL on your paperwork puts the ask in front of customers at exactly the right moment.
  • Include it in your email signature — A subtle "Leave us a Google review" link in your regular business emails generates a steady trickle of reviews over time.

What you should never do is offer incentives for reviews. Google's policies prohibit it, and it can result in your reviews being removed or your listing being penalised.

Responding to Negative Reviews Professionally

Every business with enough reviews will eventually receive a negative one. How you respond matters — both to the customer who left it and to every potential customer who reads it afterward.

A professional, measured response to a negative review demonstrates that you take customer feedback seriously and handle problems with integrity. It can actually improve your reputation rather than damage it. Here is a simple framework:

  • Acknowledge the experience — Thank the reviewer for their feedback and acknowledge that their experience did not meet expectations, without being defensive.
  • Take responsibility where appropriate — If something went wrong on your end, own it briefly and clearly.
  • Offer to make it right — Invite the reviewer to contact you directly to resolve the issue. This shows good faith and moves the conversation offline.
  • Keep it brief — A two or three sentence response is enough. Long, defensive replies make the situation worse.

Never argue with a reviewer publicly, never make excuses, and never ignore a negative review. Silence reads as indifference.

Embedding Reviews on Your Website

Your Google reviews should not live only on Google. Embedding them on your website — particularly on your homepage and service pages — turns social proof into a conversion tool that works around the clock.

Visitors who land on your website are already considering you. Seeing real reviews from real customers in Charlottetown, Summerside, or wherever you operate removes doubt and builds the trust that converts browsers into buyers. A dedicated testimonials section, a rotating review widget, or even a simple static display of your top reviews can meaningfully improve your conversion rate.

Our custom web design services include building review displays and trust sections that are designed to convert — not just decorate.
