Turning Summer Traffic Into Leads: A Guide for PEI Tourism & Hospitality Businesses
The summer rush brings visitors to your site — here's how to convert that seasonal spike into bookings, inquiries, and contacts you can follow up with next year.

Every summer, PEI tourism and hospitality businesses experience something remarkable: a massive, predictable surge in website traffic. Visitors planning their Island trips, tourists already on the ground searching for things to do, and travellers comparing accommodations and restaurants — they are all landing on your website in numbers that dwarf the rest of the year.
The question is: what happens when they get there?
For most businesses, the honest answer is: not enough. The traffic arrives, browsers browse, and a fraction of visitors take action. The rest leave without booking, without inquiring, and without leaving any trace that they were ever there. That is a significant missed opportunity — and it is almost entirely fixable.
Make the Next Step Impossible to Miss
The single most common reason summer traffic does not convert is a lack of clear, prominent calls to action. Visitors land on your website with intent — they want to book a cottage, reserve a table, sign up for a tour, or find out if you are available. If your website makes them work to figure out how to do that, many of them will give up and try the next result.
Every page of your website should have a clear, specific call to action that is visible without scrolling. Not buried in the footer. Not hidden in a navigation menu. Front and centre, in a button that is impossible to miss.
- "Book Now" for accommodations and tours
- "Reserve a Table" for restaurants
- "Check Availability" for rentals and experiences
- "Get a Quote" for services
The language matters too. "Contact Us" is vague and passive. "Book Your Stay" is specific and action-oriented. Specific CTAs consistently outperform generic ones.
Optimise Your Mobile Booking Flow
The majority of summer traffic to PEI tourism websites comes from mobile devices. Visitors are on their phones, often while they are already on the Island, making real-time decisions about where to eat, what to do, and where to stay.
If your booking or inquiry process is not seamless on mobile, you are losing those customers. Test your own website on your phone right now. How many taps does it take to make a reservation? Is the form easy to fill out on a small screen? Does the phone number click to call? Is the booking confirmation clear and immediate?
Every extra step in the mobile booking flow is a drop-off point. Simplify ruthlessly. The goal is to get from "I want to book" to "booking confirmed" in as few steps as possible.
Capture Visitors Who Are Not Ready to Book Yet
Not every summer visitor will book on their first visit to your website. Some are in early research mode, comparing options, or planning a trip that is still months away. These visitors are valuable — but only if you have a way to stay in touch with them.
Build a simple email capture into your website. An offer that is genuinely useful — a local guide, an early-bird discount, a newsletter with seasonal updates — gives visitors a reason to share their email address. That contact becomes a warm lead you can follow up with before next season.
A small, well-maintained email list of people who have already shown interest in your business is worth more than a large social media following. You own it, you control it, and you can reach those people directly when you have something to offer.
Use the Season to Build Social Proof
Summer is the best time of year to collect the reviews, photos, and testimonials that will help you convert visitors for the next three seasons. Every satisfied guest, every happy customer, every visitor who had a great experience is a potential source of social proof.
Make it easy for them to share it. Ask for Google reviews at the end of a positive interaction. Encourage guests to tag you in their social posts. Collect testimonials while the experience is fresh. The content you gather this summer will be working for you in October, February, and next May.
Track What Is Actually Working
If you do not have Google Analytics or a similar tool set up on your website, you are flying blind. You cannot improve what you cannot measure. At minimum, you should know:
- Which pages are getting the most traffic during the summer season
- Where visitors are dropping off before converting
- Which traffic sources are sending the most qualified visitors
- What percentage of visitors are taking your desired action
This data tells you exactly where to focus your improvement efforts — and it makes next summer's strategy significantly more effective.
Make This Summer Count
The summer traffic spike is one of the most valuable assets a PEI tourism or hospitality business has. With the right website strategy, it becomes a reliable engine for bookings, leads, and long-term customer relationships. Without it, it is just traffic that passes through and disappears.
